Is Look 'n' Stop compatible with ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)

Yes, Look 'n' Stop is compatible with ICS.

Look 'n' Stop must be installed on the server PC and the client PC(s). The Server PC is directly connected to the Internet. The client PC is connected to the Internet through the server PC. ICS is installed on the server PC.
The configuration of Look 'n' Stop for ICS is explained here.

Example 1
: 2 PCs connected with a crossover Ethernet cable.

The server has 2 IP address. The first one allows to identify the server on the "external" Internet network. The other address allows to identify the server on the "internal" local area network (LAN).
The example 1 also applies to Ethernet card ADSL connections and to Ethernet card cable connections. In those cases, the USB port of the server is replaced by and Ethernet card.

Example 2 : 3 PCs connected with a hub.

A crossover Ethernet cable is not sufficient to connect 3 or more PCs. A Hub allows to connect PCs together. In this example, the IP address of the server on the local network is 192.168.0.1 and the IP address of the client PCs are 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3. More than 3 PCs can be connected on a hub, depending on the number of ports available on the hub (4, 8, 16, 32, ...).

How to save periodically the logged data in a file ?

You can save periodically the data logged in the Log page of Look 'n' Stopby checking the Log File checkbox in the top right Log area of the Options page.
Look 'n' Stop automatically creates a folder named Logs.
Every day,  all the data displayed in the Log are automatically stored on your hard drive in a file named 08042001.log (Example for 4th of august 2001)

The content of the Log page and and Log files is useful to understand why an application is blocked.
Thank you to join your Log file to your email if you need help to authorize your application.

How to configure the network adaptor in the Options page of Look 'n' Stop ?

If there is only one network adaptor listed in the top left part of the Option page, there is no problem because the unique adaptor is the one selected.
If you have several network adaptors, Look 'n' Stopselects automatically a default one but you have to check that this is the one you want, using the table below.

Windows 95 / 98 / Me Windows 2000 / XP
ADSL Modem - USB Remote Access Card (IP) Look 'n' Stop driver
Dial Up Modem  Remote Access Card (IP) Look 'n' Stop driver
IDSN Modem Remote Access Card (IP) Look 'n' Stop driver
ADSL Modem - Ethernet Card - PPPoE Protocol P.P.P.o.E. Adapter
(depend on the provider)
(IP) Look 'n' Stop driver
or P.P.P.o.E. Adapter

ADSL Modem - Ethernet Card - Direct access with DHCP Ethernet Card Ethernet Card
Cable Modem - Ethernet Card - Direct Access with DHCP Ethernet Card Ethernet Card
Cable Modem - Ethernet Card - PPPoE Protocol P.P.P.o.E. Adapter

Local network - Ethernet Card Ethernet Card Ethernet Card
ICS - Server PC Connection sharing

Ethernet Card if Ethernet modem (ADSL or cable)
else : (IP) Look 'n' Stop driver

ICS - Client PC Ethernet Card Ethernet Card

For advance usage, you should know that your PC can have a more complex configuration. For example, it can be connected to the Internet through an ADSL USB modem and to a LAN (Local Area Network) through an Ethernet card. The selection of the network adaptor of Look 'n' Stopallows to set the connection you want to secure.

How to configure Look 'n' Stop for a Local Area Network ?

If you have two or more PCs that you wish to connect to the Internet, the best way to do this is to use a “Hub”. What is a HUB ?
It's a kind of « multi-plug » that allows several bits of equipments to communicate between themselves via Ethernet cables.

The diagram beneath represents a mini-network made up of 2 PCs

Connecting 2 PCs to the Internet via a Hub

Why is this important for Internet security?
If you connect 2 PCs in a network, you want them to communicate, and you want them to be protected against the perils of the Internet.

The solution to this problem is as follows. You need to install Look 'n' Stop on each PC and add a Rule that allows the exchange of data with the other PC. In order to do this, you need to know the  Ethernet Addresses of both computers. The Rule to add consists of a simple Authorization of all data coming from a source having the Ethernet Address of the other computer.

1 : Select the Internet Filtering page of Look 'n' Stop
2 : Click on the Add button
3 : In the Rule Name zone, type "ETH : Authorize the other PC”"
4 : In the Direction zone, click on "Internet >> PC and PC >> Internet"
5 : In the Destination (PC >> Net) / Source (Net>> PC) zone, position Address Ethernet on  Equals and just to the right of that enter the Ethernet Address of the other PC.
6 : Click on OK. The Rule appears at the top of the list. You may leave it there.
7 : Uncheck (suppress) the Stop sign (
) to free the Rule to allow data exchanges with the other PC.
8 : Click on Apply

N.B.: In order to find out the exact Ethernet Address of your Ethernet card, there are two solutions :
1./ Click on Start then Execute then type winipcfg. You will then get a window (of the type shown below) with the Ethernet Address in the Adapter Address line.
N.b. in Windows 2000 winipcfg doesn't exist : you will have to type ipconfig in a Console window

2./ Go to the Options page of Look 'n' Stop . The Ethernet Address can be found on the right-hand side of the Adapter of the Ethernet card. Lear more in the next paragraph.

What is a Network Adapter for Windows ?
Clic on Start, Parameters, Control Panel and Network

This will open a window containing a list
"The following Network components are installed".
This list contains a certain number of lines with an  icon on their left.
Each of these lines represents a Network Adapter.

A Network Adapter is a program component that helps your computer link a Network peripheral to Windows. Here are some explanations for a few « classic » Network Adapters.

- Network Adapter examples for Ethernet ISA or PCI cards. You have the Adapters if you have an ADSL Internet connection or if your PC is connected to a Local Area Network.
  3Com Etherlink 10 ISA
  SN-3200 PCI Ethernet Adapter

- Remote Access Card type Adapters are used for telephone modems or ADSL USB modems.
  Remote Access Card

Why is this important for Internet security?
Look 'n' Stop allows you to protect an Internet connection corresponding to an Adapter. All you have to do is check the Adapter on the Options page of Look 'n' Stop.

For example, if your PC has an Ethernet card allowing you to connect to and ADSL modem and a telephone modem you will have two Adapters in your Windows Network configuration. You will find the list of the Adapters on the Options page of
Look 'n' Stop .
If you want
Look 'n' Stop to protect you ADSL connection, you need only check the box next to the Adapter corresponding to the Ethernet card connected to your ADSL modem.

Sample list of Adapters that might be found on the Options page of Look 'n' Stop

Note:
On the right-hand end of each Adapter is the Ethernet Address
